Liz Blackman MP for Erewash has told the County Council to get a move on in delivering a station for Ilkeston in a strongly worded letter she has written to Councillor Chris Jackson, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport.
The MP is frustrated by the length of time it has taken to get straight answers on the station from Councillor Jackson and the lack of progress the County is making.
The feasibility study commissioned by the previous Labour administration gave the thumbs up for the station. It was also well received by the Department for Transport. The private train operators report Connecting Communities also assessed the case for the station as excellent.
‘Key to moving forward is the setting up of a steering group with other key partners such as Nottinghamshire County Council, local borough councils, Northern Rail and Network Rail. It is my understanding this is yet to happen’, said the MP. I am also sceptical about the County’s cost assumptions. Stations now come in modular form with standard components so there are significant economies of scale to be had. This I don’t believe has been factored in to the capital amount the county is quoting. They need to stop dithering and make some real progress.’
